The person responsible for system management is responsible for implementing and maintaining the development and test environments (both hardware and software, system administration, backup, and so on).

System Developers and Client Programmers promote their tested components and code into an integration area supervised by this role.

The role is also responsible for planning, coordinating and managing the deployment process - planning and implementing the production environment as well as installing, integrating and deploying the application in that environment. This encompasses involving and interfacing with the production organization that will host the application.

The role can also encompass developing tools to support special needs, provide additional automation of tedious or error-prone tasks, and provide better integration between tools.
